Unilever launches the first paper-based detergent bottle for

Unilever introduced new technology to manufacture paper-based detergent bottles. The OMO laundry brand (also known as Persil, Skip & Breeze) is using prototypes and will launch in Brazil in 2022. The new bottles are made of sustainable pulp and can be recycled in the waste paper stream. The inside of the bottle is sprayed with a proprietary waterproof coating to enable the paper packaging to contain liquid.

Unilever hopes to promote this paper bottle in its European market and is experimenting with the same technology for hair care bottles.

These bottles were developed through the Pulpex consortium. Last year, beverage manufacturers Diageo and Pepsi joined Unilever to form Pulpex with the risk management company Pilot Lite. The Pulpex Alliance was established to produce a variety of plastic-free single-molded bottles that will be used in major fast-moving consumer goods companies.

Diageo has launched a plastic-free paper spirit bottle, which will make its debut in the company's Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky series this year.

Richard Slater, Chief R&D Officer of Unilever, said: "In order to solve the plastic waste problem, we need to completely rethink how we design and package products. This requires a radical change, and this change can only be achieved through industry-wide cooperation.

"Pulpex paper-based bottle technology is an exciting step in the right direction, and we are excited to work together to test this innovation for our products. Innovation using alternative materials is a key part of our sustainable packaging strategy. And will play an important role in our commitment to halve the use of virgin plastic materials by 2025."

In 2019, Unilever, which owns iconic brands such as Dove, Cif and Magnum, set a goal of halving the use of plastic packaging by 2025, reducing plastic packaging by more than 100,000 tons, increasing the use of recycled plastics and collecting and There are more plastic packaging processed than sold.

Unilever is the latest company to try out prototypes of paper bottles.

The Coca-Cola Company-one of the largest plastic producers in the food and beverage sector-has confirmed plans to test 2,000 paper bottles this year to test the feasibility of this material as a single-use plastic alternative.

The Coca-Cola Company has been cooperating with other well-known companies including Absolut, L'Oreal and Carlsberg to develop bottles. These designs are being shared through a partner company called The Paper Bottle Company (Paboco), which aims to promote the joint project.

Paboco members confirmed their first real simulation test plan for paper bottles. Since the fall of 2020, the alcoholic beverage giant has sold 2,000 bottles of wine in its Swedish and British markets.

2021 Green Packaging Innovation Application Forum and Innovation Exhibition (Second) will focus on the development direction of social responsibility in the packaging industry of “carbon neutral”, “recyclable”, “reduced”, “low carbon” and “sustainable”. Terminal brand enterprises in the two major fields of FMCG and e-commerce logistics, well-known green packaging enterprises and the industrial chain will jointly discuss future development directions and opportunities.
