Japanese paper companies plant premium tree species to accel

In order to promote the realization of a decarbonized society, domestic paper companies have launched measures to effectively utilize forest resources, and are committed to cultivating cedars and cypresses that grow faster than standard varieties and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Among them, Nippon Paper Co., Ltd. has comprehensively carried out the cultivation of saplings called "premium tree species" from this year.

Premium tree species are selected from cedar trees and cypresses, etc., and are cultivated after crossing individuals with a faster growth rate. The growth rate is about 1.5 times that of standard varieties, and it has a stronger absorption capacity for carbon dioxide.

Naoki Negishi, chief researcher at Nippon Paper Corporation's Forest Resources Research Office, said: "We will use the production technologies cultivated in overseas afforestation projects to promote the planting of premium tree species."

In addition, Oji Holdings Group focuses on "carbon emission trading", that is, buying and selling the part that exceeds or falls below the stipulated total emission, and plans to spend 100 billion days to acquire 150,000 hectares of forest overseas by 2030 to promote afforestation.
