Australia's goal is to phase out large quantities of single-use plastics by 2025, the Institute of Biodegradable Materials reported. New South Wales (New South Wales) is the only state in Australia that has not committed to a complete ban on single-use plastic bags. But now, NSW is following other states in banning thin and light single-use plastic bags, with a specific single-use plastic ban coming into effect on June 1, 2022.

Single-use plastic cutlery, straws, whisks, plates and bowls, cotton swabs, expanded polystyrene food containers and products containing plastic microbeads will also be discontinued from November 1. And, it works in any product that contains microbeads, such as face and body cleansers, exfoliants, masks, shampoos, conditioners, hair dyes, and toothpastes.

Likewise, the ban covers items made from biodegradable, compostable or bioplastics, as well as items made from Australian certified compostable plastics.
However, using straws, people with disabilities or medical needs will be exempt.
NSW aims to reduce total waste generated per capita by 10 per cent by 2030, while reducing waste by 60 per cent and tripling the rate of waste discharge. The same goes for plastic recycling by then.
Similar laws are already in force in South Australia and Queensland, and Victoria has set a target date of 2023.
