10-year plastic limit, is it really a speed limit?

It is understood that the average daily order volume of the three major domestic takeaway platforms is about 20 million, and each order contains at least one plastic bag. Based on an estimate of 0.06 square meters per bag, how many football fields can the plastic bags consumed every day cover?

It has been ten years since the plastic restriction order was implemented on June 1, 2008. However, does the ten-year-old plastic restriction order really play its due role? Does the ten-year plastic limit really achieve the goal of limiting plastic? The editor sorted out the plastic restrictions of the takeaway industry, large supermarkets, and small stalls and hawkers, and found out through relevant data.

Takeaway industry

It is reported that the daily order volume of the three major domestic takeaway platforms is about 20 million, and the daily consumption of plastic bags can cover 168 football fields! The huge data reflects that the food delivery industry has become the hardest hit area of the "plastic restriction order"! With the rapid development of the takeaway industry, plastic lunch boxes and plastic bags are consumed in large quantities. Because these plastic products have the smell of food, after most people eat take-out, they generally put the food boxes and other garbage in the take-out bag and discard them together, and will not be reused. Although some businesses have taken measures to charge lunch boxes, plastic products still face the fate of being directly discarded.

Large supermarket
Nowadays, when checking out in the supermarket, most of us will hear this sentence: "Do you need a plastic bag?" After hearing this sentence, some people will say no, and then take out their own eco-friendly bag.

If it is said that the takeaway industry is the hardest hit area of the "plastic restriction order", then the large supermarkets are the deceleration area of the "plastic restriction order". In recent years, with the implementation of the "plastic restriction order", it has achieved obvious results in the field of large supermarkets.

Data from the National Development and Reform Commission shows that since the implementation of the plastic restriction order, the use of plastic bags in supermarkets across the country has generally decreased by more than 2/3, and the cumulative reduction of plastic shopping bags is about 1.4 million tons, which is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 30 million tons.

stall hawker
10 years of plastic restrictions, not only the takeaway industry, but also small stalls and hawkers. Especially in some roadside stalls, vegetable markets and other areas. The plastic bags used in this area are characterized by being small and thin. Therefore, when many people buy fresh fruits and vegetables, they are afraid that the bags will not be able to bear the weight, so they often ask for one or two more plastic bags.

And why is there no charge for plastic bags in this field? According to relevant personnel, there are two main reasons: First, the cost of plastic bags is low, such as 70 plastic bags, a total of 1 yuan. Second, the competition among similar merchants is fierce. If they charge their own fees and other merchants do not, they may lose their business.

Judging from the actual situation, the overall effect of the "plastic restriction order" is not obvious, and it was even in a very embarrassing situation for a time. The root cause is that in addition to the weak public awareness of environmental protection, the supervision of relevant government departments still needs to be improved.

Bangladesh's law stipulates that those who import or sell plastic bags can be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, and those who distribute plastic are sentenced to 6 months in prison. Today, the country's supermarkets only sell cloth and paper bags. For another example, in Germany, Japan, the United States and other countries, a virtuous cycle of plastic production, use, recycling, and reuse has been realized, and white pollution has been fundamentally eliminated. Stones from other mountains can also be used for reference. Only by strengthening the supervision system of relevant laws and strangling pollution from the source can the "plastic limit order" truly achieve the effect of speed limit.

In the editor's opinion, the original intention of the "plastic restriction order" is not only to reduce the use of a few plastic bags and plastic lunch boxes, but to fundamentally improve the public's awareness of environmental protection, save resources, and live a restrained life.

At this time, we invade and pollute the living environment of future generations and ignore the sustainable development of the ecological environment. Are we a little selfish and callous? We shout slogans of environmental protection, but we have been doing things that are harmful to the environment. Is it a little hypocritical and ruthless? I hope we don't become the Louis XV who said "after I die, even if the flood is terrifying", I hope what we do now will not become a powerful weapon to restrain the ecological balance in the future.
